Did they get it wrong? I think that hands them way too much credit, to say that pain & suffering & a disgraced ridiculed vastly lowered America isn't what they want.
As this disaster unfurls, the very rich will feel immense pain to their portfolios, possibly.
But they will have made serfs of Americans & immigrants. America will be desperate & a wreck as health care, science, universities are all cancelled. Funding for the entire liberal elite laptop job world trying to do good in the world is robustly cancelled. The social safety net and security that built is cancelled. We humanity will take whatever scraps we can get from the giant corporations these enormously wealthy mouthpieces get in the resounding absence.
This is totally the neo-Monarchism and fuedalism that Yarvin advocated. This is a push to the "Network State" where only a rare few maintain services & systems, & everyone else has to fend for themselves & no one helps them.
They got it exactly right. They wanted the worst, they wanted unquestioned dominion. The rising tide floats all boats, but as the tide lowers we find their enormous wealth has been tasked to building massive supports to keep them up up up in even the worst of tides.
These are the foes. They've spoken against universities & research for years. They are against humanity, and they're getting what they wanted.
Agreed. Don’t let them pretend to be sympathetic or empathetic. Every single one of these turds knew exactly what they were trying to buy, and none of them regret their choices.
Perhaps they got some concepts wrong / predictions.
But the rich and powerful have always been attracted to authoritarianism. If they can pay cronies to ensure they get what they want out of government (pardons, regulatory freedom, reduce labor costs/protections), they're happy to do so. What happens to everyone else doesn't matter to many of them. They're not patriots, and despite the absurd assumption that seems to stick, business people are not economists.
Their portfolios will recover, and in the meantime the Republicans will cut them fat tax cuts and be very friendly to their idea of fair labor practices and environmental regs. It's a net win for them, and you're kidding yourself if you believe otherwise.
Founders need to stop taking money from a16z et al. These VC's brands should be so completely tarnished that they are never given a seat in the halls of serious people ever again

The word that best describes it so far is "sabotage".
There is nothing that works in the country's best interests and lots that work against it.
America's biggest export was stability and safety. And it is being rapidly undermined.
Too much wishful thinking and too little critical thing
Tariffs came as a surprise to no one that was paying attention
